Deliver for Veterans Act Aims to Assist Disabled Veterans in Hawaii |
Legislation Seeks to Cover Shipping Costs for Specialized Vehicles |
Disabled veterans in Hawaii often face significant challenges when it comes to transporting specialized vehicles from the mainland United States.
Recognizing this issue, Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii has partnered with Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska to reintroduce the Deliver for Veterans Act.
âDisabled veterans deserve access to every benefit they have earnedâregardless of where they live,â stated Senator Schatz.
âOur bill is about basic fairness and will help disabled veterans in Hawaii and other isolated areas receive the specialized vehicles they need to go about their daily lives.â
Currently, eligible veterans can receive up to $26,400 to purchase or modify accessible vehicles.
However, these funds cannot be used for shipping, leaving veterans outside the continental U.S. to cover these costs themselves.
Retired Marine Lt. Col. John Digiovanni emphasized the need for comprehensive support, stating, âI think that all benefits for veterans are needed; they donât have enough as it is today.â
He also highlighted the varying costs of living across states, suggesting that financial assistance should reflect these differences.
The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs for further consideration.
In related developments, the Daniel Kahikina Akaka VA Clinic opened in Kapolei, Oahu, on April 8, 2024.
This 88,000-square-foot facility provides multispecialty outpatient care, enhancing healthcare access for veterans across the Pacific Islands.
Named after the late Senator Daniel Akaka, an Army veteran and advocate for veteran healthcare, the clinic represents a significant step forward in supporting Hawaii's veteran community.
As the Deliver for Veterans Act progresses, it holds the potential to alleviate financial burdens for disabled veterans in Hawaii, ensuring they have the necessary resources to lead independent and fulfilling lives. |
